Energy efficiency rebates for businesses, commercial property
The City of Walnut Creek has launched the "Walnut Creek Energy Champion" rebate program with rebates of up to $2,500 to help commercial property and business owners become more energy efficient. To be eligible for the rebate, businesses must first complete the Business Energy Services Team (BEST) Program, which offers its own rebate.  More...
Cooling stations open in Walnut Creek
Residents needing relief from the heat are welcome at both the Tice Valley Gymnasium and Civic Park Community Center. Tice Valley Gymnasium is located at 2055 Tice Valley Boulevard, and is open until 10 p.m.; vending machines are available at the gym. Civic Park Community Center, 1375 Civic Drive, is open until 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, and until 10 p.m. Wednesday, July 1. There will be pitchers of cold water and cups at Civic Park Community Center for public use.   
Walnut Creek Walks heads to the Open Space
Join Walnut Creek Mayor Bob Simmons on a hike in the Shell Ridge Open Space on Saturday, July 11. Hikers will pass five ponds in the open space; whether the ponds have water in them remains to be seen. The 3.5-mile walk takes place on both fire roads and single track trail, with some elevation change. Hiking shoes are encouraged! Bring water and sunscreen. Meet in the Hanna Grove Activity Area parking lot at Borges Ranch, 1035 Castle Rock Road, for a 9 a.m. departure. Walnut Creek Walks is a yearlong series of walks led by Mayor Simmons. Interactive Open Space exhibit at City Hall
Check out the unique interactive exhibition 'Open Space' in the Walnut Creek City Hall first floor gallery space through August 1. Curated by Civic Arts Education curator Peter Foucault, the exhibit features local works of art depicting the Open Space. Each artist also provided a written explanation of why they chose to portray that particular spot.
PG&E transmission upgrade work under way
PG&E is upgrading 27 miles of transmission line from Antioch to Moraga. Work in Walnut Creek is starting and will run through August. Activities will take place in or near Shell Ridge Open Space, Sugarloaf Open Space and Rudgear Park. In some cases, helicopters will be used to do the work.
